Retirement of Geraldine McNulty as sacristan

It is a bittersweet occasion in our parish as we mark the retirement of Geraldine McNulty as the sacristan for St Columba’s Church in Doneyloop after almost a quarter of a century of service.  Geraldine was a constant and obliging presence in the church and will be missed as sacristan by everyone from altar servers to undertakers.  Not only did she carry out duties so consistently well so that all our ceremonies went as smoothly as possible but she opened and closed the church day and night, winter and summer and ensured that all the altar linen and liturgical vestments were kept clean and tidy.  Above all she was remarkable for being a thoroughly welcoming presence as she greeted so many as they made their way into the building.  And that welcome was extended to any priest who had the good fortune to serve in St Columba’s and that sense of gratitude is undoubtedly also shared by Fr Porter, Fr Crilly, Fr McGoldrick and the late Fr Rafferty as well as Fr McGavigan and Fr O’Doherty.  My only regret is that due to these current restrictions we won’t be able to give her the send off she deserves because of but I can promise you that it has been postponed and not cancelled and it’s on the top of the to do list for whenever it is possible.  It is good that Geraldine will still be our neighbour, however, but the place won’t be the same without her.  Geraldine, a heartfelt thanks for all you have done – and a long and happy and healthy and holy retirement.  God bless you and yours always. Ciarán Hegarty
